Recording and Transcribing Audio In Microsoft Word Document

The transcription feature is only available for premium customers, so to proceed further you should opt for a paid Microsoft 365 plan. The feature is only available on the web version of Microsoft Word. It’s slotted to release on Office Mobile by the end of the year. As for the offline MS Word app, there is no word on the timing of its release. Microsoft’s transcribing audio will only require you to follow a few simple steps.

Transcribe Audio In Microsoft Word

  • As a first step, you need to open office.com in the web browser, sign in with your Microsoft account. Then create a new Microsoft word file.
  • Under the Home Section, you will find the Dictate option in the right corner. Click next and select Transcribe.
  • A mini dialogue box will open on the right side, here you can choose to upload an audio file or record directly using Microsoft Word.
  • Then, Microsoft Word will start transcribing the audio file that you have uploaded using Azure Cognitive Services which is its AI platform in the cloud.
  • After some time, you will find the transcription on the right side of the window. The best thing about this AI is, it is able to distinguish different voices that help in separating the transcription.
  • Finally, you can simply click on “Add all to document” and the transcription will move to your main Word file. You can also play the audio and edit out anything that is not in place.
